Hey there, what is best in life?

To be extremely rich? To have a family who loves you? To be happy and peaceful every day of your life? To be your own boss? To work, relax, and make money whenever you feel like it. To enjoy and have fun?

Or to have a healthy mix of all?

Honestly, there is never a straight answer to the question.

What we want from life is different for each individual. And as such, the things we consider as “best in life” is different for everyone.

Ask a million people “what is best in life,” and you’ll most likely get a million different answers.

But sometimes, what someone considers to be the “best in their life” can be a product of circumstances.

For example, someone who just lost their job would want nothing more than for them to get another job.

So, if you ask such a person “what’s best in life,” don’t be surprised to hear something like “having a job/financial stability.”

Canon the Barbarian

This takes my memory back to the 1982 movie Conan the Barbarian.

In that movie, there was a particular scene where the general asked Conan and one other guy (a Mongol) what they thought was best in life.

Alas, the two men gave two completely different answers.

General: Hao! Dai ye! We won again! This is good, but what is best in life?

Mongol: The open steppe, fleet horse, falcons at your wrist, and the wind in your hair.

General: Wrong! Conan! What is best in life?

Conan: To crush your enemies. See them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their women.

General: That is good! That is good.

From this excerpt, it’s clearly evident that what’s best in life differs for different people. While the Mongol considered luxurious things and flashy ornaments the best things in life, Conan took pride in crushing and humiliating his enemies.

All of our “best” revolves around certain concepts

Although we’ve already established that the chances of two people having the same view about life are slim, the things we all consider as being the best in life almost always revolve around certain concepts like love, relationship, family, happiness, success, etc.

For example, someone might say the best thing in life is to chase and realize a dream.

And another (like Conan) might say the best thing in life is to crush your enemies.

Although their respective perception about life appears different, it both revolves around “success.”

Remember, to achieve a dream is a success. And to defeat your enemies is a success, too.

Family is another thing humans hold dear.

So, it’s not surprising to see people mentioning things that revolve around family as the best in life.

Things like:

  • Having and raising kids
  • Having someone who’s blindly loyal to you
  • Spending quality time with your loved ones laughing, playing, and creating memories
  • Having someone you can trust and call on in time of need

In the end, the family brings us joy, companionship, purpose, a sense of responsibility, and so much more.

But don’t forget that family isn’t only those with whom we share biological ties. Friends, colleagues, mates, companions, etc., can all qualify as a family.

For lots of people, nothing beats being in love.

The feeling is simply out of this world.

It makes you feel good, gives you goosebumps, makes you happy, and gladdens your heart.

This is why you’ll likely see many people mentioning things that revolve around love as being the best in life.

For these people, when someone asks: what’s best in life? Responses like the following seem most appropriate:

  • To be in love
  • To have a beautiful woman who loves you
  • The gentle cuddling of a woman
  • Passionate sex

Money

If a survey was conducted today across the globe and people were asked “what is best in life,” I’m sure a large chunk of the respondents’ responses would revolve around money.

And quite rightly so. After all, money makes the world go round.

For many humans, what’s best in life is “to have lots of money,” “to be able to invest in a lot of things,”  “to give to others,” “to be stinking rich and oppress other people,” and stuff like that.
